How to play Othello

Abstract

Othello, also known as Reversi, is a strategy game for two players played on an 8x8 board. This guide will help you understand how to play the digital version of the game against the machine.

Initial setup

1. The board starts with 4 pieces in the center: 2 white and 2 black, placed diagonally.
2. You play with the black pieces and go first.

How to play

1. On your turn, place a piece of your color on an empty square.
2. The piece must be placed in a way that "captures" at least one opponent's piece between the new piece and another of your pieces already on the board.
3. All of the opponent's pieces that are trapped are flipped to your color.
4. If you can't make a valid move, the turn passes to the other player.

End of the Game

• The game ends when the board is full or neither player can move.
• The player with the most pieces of their color wins.

Tips

• Control the corners: they are strategic positions.
• Avoid placing pieces adjacent to empty corners.
• Try to limit your opponent's movement options.
